On Losing My MAC Virginity

6th November 2013

So, up until three weeks ago I didn’t own any MAC products. I KNOW, RIGHT? I’d been to a couple of MAC counters before but, being totally honest, I’d always found the staff a little unfriendly and unhelpful and had always walked away without purchasing anything. I think with a brand like MAC it can be difficult to know where to start as they have such a huge product range.

However, I decided it was time to lose my MAC virginity in Florida. I’d checked the prices online and the savings were insane, so I knew it was the right place to pick up my first products. While an eyeshadow or lipstick retails for £15 in the UK you can pick them up for $15 in the US ($15.98 including sales tax), which worked out as £9 based on the exchange rate while I was away. A pretty awesome saving, I’m sure you’ll agree.

I spent a bit of time online picking out a few eyeshadows and lipsticks I liked the look of, so I wouldn’t get too overwhelmed by everything on offer instore. My wishlist grew and grew and I suddenly realised I already had a MAC problem before owning my first item. Oops.

The long and short of it is that I went MAC mad in Florida. Eyeshadows, lipsticks, a foundation, pressed powder, blush… You name it, it was in my basket. At one point I visited a MAC store and two counters in the space of two hours… Oh dear. In my defence I was searching for a specific lipstick (Speak Louder) which, for some reason, was sold out everywhere! Never fear, though, I managed to pick it up at the airport on the way home.

Ladies, I understand your love for MAC now, I really do. The shadows are super pigmented, gorgeously soft and have crazy staying powder. I’ve worn Naked Lunch pretty much every day since I bought it and I came home with a MAC wishlist twice as long as it was when I started.

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. MAC, I salute you.

Shopping in Florida

30th October 2013

I did a lot of shopping in Florida. In fact, I think maybe I did more shopping in Florida than anybody has ever done in the history of time. I spent two years transferring some of my wages into a separate account so I could have a giant blowout in America and, dear lord, did I have a blowout. Sephora saw me coming, that’s for sure.

I’m not going to do a full on haul as there’s way too much to put in one post but I’m going to do a video about my favourite purchases and gradually review things I picked up. Instead, I thought I’d just share a picture of my purchases in all of its over the top ridiculousness. Bank balance, forgive me:

Cosmetics in America are a lot cheaper than they are in the UK so I always make sure I save up well in advance before a holiday. The base price is cheaper anyway, and when you take the exchange rate into consideration there are plenty of bargains to be had, especially when it comes to higher end brands. I’m going to write a separate post about the best cult products to pick up if you want to save a few pennies but for now I’ll just mention the Cosmetics Company outlet, where I found myself paying around £6.50 for MAC eyeshadows (a LOT of which were current, permanent shades), £5 for Bumble and Bumble treatments and around £11 for Origins face masks. CRAZY CHEAP.

And hopefully that gives you an insight into why I went so batshit crazy for cosmetics!

50% Off MUA Haul

13th February 2013

So, some of you might be thinking ‘Golly gee, this post is late, that sale was on ages ago’. Well, you are not mistaken, the sale WAS on ages ago but I actually only recently received my parcel. I’m not going to go into the details as I’ve seen a lot of blog posts talking about the issues but, basically, it pretty much ran like a what not to do in customer service.

Still, the offer was great and when my items arrived they were in great condition, so I’m happy.

Moving swiftly on, here’s a look at all of the goodies I picked up:

There it is, people. All for a mere £18. Bargain.

Nail Constellations in Leo, Libra, Scorpio and Gemini. I’m definitely interested to try these on an accent nail for a night out, as I’ve seen a few pictures on the blogs and they look lovely. I did get Pisces for Christmas so I have the full set now!
Fur-Effect Nails in Fluff & Cuddles, Fluffy Bobbin and Fuzzy Fluff. I’ve tried out Boo Boo Fluff before and, while I don’t think I’d wear these in any way other than to go ‘FEEL HOW FLUFFY THEY ARE’ it was completely worth it for £1.75 just to have a dabble.

I’ve been wanting to get my hands on some of the brushes ever since they were released. I’ve only tried the stippling brush and, oh dear lord, it’s brill – proper review coming soon!

I love my Urban Decay Primer Potion but it’s not cheap so I thought I’d see how the MUA version goes. So far, so good. Same for the primer – I’ve tried a few and, while my Bodyshop is my favourite at the moment, I do definitely like this one a lot.

My only purchase from the Pro-Base range so far, I’m liking this one a lot even though I’ve only used it a couple of times. I’ll write up a proper review once I’ve used it a bit more.

And finally, the Going for Gold, Pretty Pastels and Glamour Days palettes. These are the only three I needed for a full set and I use my MUA palettes ALL the time so thought I’d snap them up for only £2 a pop! Can’t say fairer than that.

So, did you guys pick anything up in the MUA 50% off sale? Let me know in the comments if you posted any hauls and I’ll check them out!

February Spending Ban (-ish)

1st February 2013

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to carry on being careful with my money. As I said back then, I have a part time office job and work as a freelance copywriter, so my office salary is the only fixed income I have and, being part time, I do have to be careful with it! I am pretty good with my money but, like most people, I did get a bit carried away in the January sales so I only just broke even with my finances in Jan – not ideal as I like to save where possible!

So, to remedy this I’m going to cut down on my spending in February, partly to get my finances back in order and partly because I really, really don’t need to buy any more make up or beauty products for a long old time, especially not after my ridiculous sales spend up.

I’m not being super harsh with myself so I’m allowing myself the following:

– Free rein with the Barry M spring collection – I know I’m going to buy these anyway so if I don’t give myself this free pass I’ll just cheat and get them the day they come out; might as well embrace it! Plus, these will be bought with money that I’ve had refunded from sale purchases that didn’t work out… So it kiiind of doesn’t count. Or, at least, that’s my logic and I’m sticking to it.

– Anything that runs out that needs to be replaced can be purchased – Really the only potential things here are foundation and a nail varnish top coat, as I have more than one of everything else.

– Although, speaking of foundation, my only other pre-approved purchase is a MAC foundation – as I’ve arranged to go and get my foundation matched this month with a friend.

– Shampoo/conditioner etc can be purchased but I need to look for a bargain.

So, in short, MAC foundation, Barry M spring collection and that is it, then if I’m good I’ll be able to pick up some goodies at the meet up I’m going to at the end of the month – which I’m majorly excited for, by the way! It’s not a major spending ban like I know some of you are doing (and you are doing AMAZINGLY by the way, I do NOT have the will power) but it should cut down on any impulse buys and make my bank balance a little healthier!
