Autumn/Winter Lipstick Picks (Part Two)

15th October 2014

Group 2 So here is part two of my autumn/winter lipstick picks series! Like last time, I’m sharing some perfect colours for the cooler months, ranging from deep pinks to burgundy berry tones. I’ve kept the rest of my make up super neutral so you can see how the colours work on their own. Hope you enjoy!

Too Faced Collage

First up is the Too Faced La Creme Lip Cream in Bumbleberry (£18 from Debenhams/Boots etc). I’ve mentioned this one a few times in the past and it’s still one of my favourites of all time. It’s such a gorgeous garnet colour that’s absolutely perfect for light skin tones. Sometimes shades that are too deep don’t work on me so this is a great way for me to wear an autumnal colour that works with pale skin.

These lip creams are my favourite formula and if you haven’t tried them I really, really recommend that you do. They’re hugely hydrating, stay in place for hours and give a lovely satin smooth finish. Continue reading

Autumn/Winter Lipstick Picks!

8th October 2014

Group 1 Title

Now we’re into October and autumn’s well and truly upon us I wanted to share some of my autumn/winter lipstick choices with you all. I’ve got a whole load in my make up drawers so I’m going to split this into a few different posts.

Today I’m bringing you five of my picks, which range from £1 budget buys to £23 high end choices and everything in between. The colours featured are everything from pinks to blacks and hopefully there’s something for everyone. Enjoy!

Revlon Lollipop collage

First up we have the Revlon Lip Butter in Lollipop (£7.99 from Boots). It’s a deep pink that’s a great transitional colour to wear while the weather tries to make its mind up, like it is at the moment. Like all the Revlon Lip Butters, this is extremely hydrating and is great to combat dry lips.

MAC Plumful collage

Next we have one of my favourite ever autumnal shades, MAC’s Plumful (£15.50 from Debenhams etc etc). This one’s a Lustre finish so it has a slick finish that makes your lips look really well-moisturised – very important during the cool months when lips can get dehydrated.

Plumful is a plum-pink shade that’s a good one for anybody looking to try out berry tones without going full on burgundy. Plumful goes with everything and it’s always one I’ll reach for if I’m not sure what to use.

Make Up Revolution 100 Vamp

So…I wanted to show you some shades I love, plus a couple I really don’t think work on me. This is Makeup Revolution’s 100% Vamp (£1 from the Makeup Revolution site or Superdrug) and…yeah, I don’t think it’s doing it for me. It’s a cool colour and I think on darker skin tones it could look stunning but with my pale skin I’m not a fan. I think it looks a bit Halloween-y but I fancy blotting it and using a red on top to see if it’ll make more of a scarlet colour. We’ll see!

This has an interesting formula that’s almost a bit oily but not in an unpleasant way. It applies nicely but the colour comes out a little uneven, as you can see from the picture. That said, if you’re looking for something to make a real impact and have the confidence to rock a black lip – go for it! I’d love to find a way to make this one work for me so any suggestions, let me know.

Buxom collage My penultimate pick for this post (hello, alliteration) is Buxom’s Full Bodied Lipstick in Menace ($21 from Sephora but they don’t ship Buxom to the UK. Sad face). Unfortunately it’s come out a little bit red in the photo as it’s more burgundy in real life. It’s a gorgeous, creamy formula and also has a nice minty scent, which is quite a nice touch.

Hourglass collage   Last up is the Hourglass Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon (£23 from Space.NK). This applies a little lighter than it looks in the tube but it’s dark red liquid lipstick that has a gorgeous velvety finish. Once this dries it really stays in place and fades evenly to leave a red stain on the lips – handy if you don’t have time to keep touching it up.

So here are my first five choices – what do you think? My favourite is MAC’s Plumful but I’ve also made a big dent in the Revlon Lip Butter so those would be the top two to add to your wishlist, in my opinion. What are some of your favourite autumn lipstick colours?

The Lipstick Tag

21st May 2014

I saw this tag over at the lovely Jennie’s blog and knew I had to take part – lately lipsticks are becoming my weakness and my collection is growing and growing!

1. How many lipsticks do you own?

Eek, I dread to think. Maybe… 35? Plus a bunch of glosses, lip butters, lip liners, lip balms… Yeah, lip products are definitely my downfall!

2. What was the first lipstick you owned?

I think it was a Natural Collection lipstick in Raspberry, which was quite a deep raspberry pink – bit of a bold colour for my first lippie! I loved it, though, and went through about three tubes before I decided to branch out to another colour. I used to wear it with the Natural Collection Juicy Lips lip gloss in Turkish Delight over the top – I’ve still got a tube of that gloss kicking around somewhere!

3. What is your favourite lipstick brand?

Ooh, I think I’d have to go for Too Faced, because I love their La Creme lipsticks sooo much, but I also love MAC (obviously) and Revlon Lip Butters.

4. What is your most worn lipstick?

Ooh that’s a tricky one. I’d say either MAC Speak Louder, Too Faced La Creme in Bumbleberry or Nars Dolce Vita.

5. What is your favourite finish?

Anything creamy and moisturising! My lips are quite dry so sometimes matte colours don’t look great on me, though I do like the finish. Something that has the consistency of a lip butter will always be my favourite, because they’re so low maintenance and leave my lips lovely and smooth.

6. What was the last lipstick you bought?

I picked up five (yes, five…) lipsticks from Make Up Revolution. Come on, there were £1 each, I couldn’t resist.

7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag?

I change my bag around every time I go out so I don’t usually find myself carting loads of lip products around. At the moment I have three – Nars Dolce Vita lipstick, a Buxom lip gloss and a Burt’s Bees lip balm.

8. What is your favourite red lip colour?

Hmm, it’s a bit of a toss up between Too Faced’s Red Stiletto and MAC’s Ruby Woo. I love Ruby Woo for that statement matte lip that really commands attention but it can be quite high maintenance. Red Stiletto is a gorgeous red that feels super creamy on the lips and because it’s technically more of a lip butter than a lipstick you can whack it on at the beginning of the night and leave it to do its thing.

9. How do you store your lipsticks?

I have a couple of acrylic holders that I store my favourites in, which sits on top of my make up table. Then the colours I use less often, lip balms and glosses etc are in a drawer next to my make up table.

10. Which lipsticks are you currently lusting after?

MAC Creme Cup, YSL Rouge Volupte in Corail Jalouse (or Rose Opera) and Chanel Rouge Coco in Mademoiselle. Yeah, think I’ll be saving for a while for these! And that’s without a mention of Tom Ford…

So there you go, that’s my take on the lipstick tag! I tag all of you lovely people reading this to take part :).

Nars Sheer Lipstick in Dolce Vita

9th April 2014

I’m a relative newcomer to Nars, it has to be said. I haven’t tried out many of their products but those I have tried I’m a big fan of. I’ve got a primer sample knocking around in my make up drawers that I haven’t dipped into yet, but after falling in love with this gorgeous lipstick I’m keen to try more from the brand.

This is quite a sheer formula (as the name suggests) so it’s not a great pick for anybody looking for a powerful pop of colour, though if you’re after a ‘your lips but better’ shade then I’d definitely point you in the direction of Dolce Vita. Perfect for the day, or for a more natural look on a night out, Dolce Vita is a soft dusty rose colour that glides on easily and evenly and has an impressive wear time.

As this is more of a sheer colour I found it didn’t dry my lips out at all if I had a slick of balm on underneath, and lasted for about four hours before I had to touch it up. I love this colour, it’s subtle and pretty and has already become one of my staple lipsticks. Based on this lippie, I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for other lipsticks from Nars – maybe a brighter offering next time!

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Streak

8th March 2014
I’m a long term fan of Urban eyeshadows (and the glorious Primer Potion, of course) but it wasn’t until recently that I branched out to try a range of their other products. Something I was desperate to try was something for the lips, so I picked up a couple of the Revolution lipsticks, one of which was the shade Streak, which is the lovely colour I want to talk to you about today.
Streak is a delicate coral pink that’s a little lighter than I usually wear, but I love the understated wash of colour it gives to my lips. This shade is lovely and pigmented and lasts for about three hours on me before I have to reapply. It does stain the lips a little so wears down nicely and evenly, which is always a bonus if you don’t have time to keep reapplying.
I’m quite picky when it comes to lip products as I do have dry lips, so a poor formula will cling to my lips and generally look a bit dodgy. I do prefer a creamy formula, for obvious reasons, so I was massively pleased to discover the UD Revolution lipsticks are rich, nourishing and long-lasting. The formula contains jojoba oil and cocoa butter, along with lots of other lovely moisturising ingredients, which is probably why it feels so great on the lips.
The shade range is spectacular and I have my eye on approximately 1234231 other colours from the collection, oh dear. I really recommend this shade as a no-fuss, subtle day time lippie. For something a bit more attention-grabbing I’d point you in the direction of Venom, which is high up on my wishlist!
